Perhaps more than any other NHL team,
the Philadelphia Flyers are about "family."
It has been forever thus, from the team's
very inception on June 5, 1967.
It is fitting, in the family tradition,
that one of the greatest Flyers of them
all, Bobby Clarke who simply bleeds Flyers
orange, is the team's current general
manager. And Ed Snider, a Philadelphia
institution in sports, entertainment and
philanthropy for more than three decades,
is still the team's chairman.
The Flyers were actually the second NHL
team to call the "City of Brotherly
Love" home, following by some 35
seasons a club called the Philadelphia
Quakers.
The Quakers, formerly the Pittsburgh
Pirates, played only one NHL season, 1930-31,
won only four of 44 games, and promptly
ceased operations for good. The Quakers
were better known for the fact that they
were owned by boxer Benny Leonard, who
was once the lightweight champion of the
world.
Once big league hockey returned to Philadelphia,
with the great NHL expansion of 1967,
the Flyers were born, and they were an
instant success. Buy
