In
the fall of 1993, Jerry Colangelo, owner
of the Phoenix Suns, the area's wildly
popular and successful NBA franchise,
announced he was assembling an ownership
group to apply for a Major League Baseball
expansion team( the Arizona Diamondbacks).
This was after a great deal of lobbying
by the Maricopa County Sports Authority,
a local group formed to preserve Cactus
League spring training in Arizona and
eventually secure a Major League franchise
for the state.
Arizona Diamondbacks
baseball at Chase Field gets a little
more interesting this year, as old-timer
Randy “Big Unit” Johnson is
on his way back from the Bronx, to climes
closer to his Phoenix home. The Diamondbacks
gave up Luis Vizcaino and some minor league
prospects to attain his Chase Field homecoming.

The Arizona Diamondbacks,
named for the native viper snake that
roams the desert outskirts not far from
Chase Field, will rely on youth primarily.
As the 2007 opens for the Arizona
Diamondbacks, besides Johnson,
they will rely on another senior producer,
Eric Byrnes. At age 31, Byrnes, who hit
.277, in 2006, will shoulder the hopes
and dreams of Arizona Diamondback
fans, young and old, but mostly old. Chase
Field is a great place to see a baseball
game; even though temperatures average
around 100 degrees during the dog days
of summer, it’s a dry desert heat
and there are always plenty of emergency
medical technicians on hand, equipped
with water and high spirits, from their
world championship efforts of the past.
Look out for the new Arizona
Diamondback uniforms at Chase
Field this year. They were previewed by
the media and modeled by players over
the winter.
