In the olden days, when the music world
challenged America to produce a band that
could rock as hard as the Rolling Stones,
the U.S. answered back with bands from
each coast: The Eagles from the west,
and Aerosmith from the
east. And one of those bands has rocked
hard ever since.
Rising from the streets, Aerosmith,
like the band named for the city, and
like The Cars, Jonathan Richman and the
Modern Lovers, and The J. Geils Band,
Aerosmith honed their
musical skills and developed a fan base
in and around Boston.
Steven Tallarico and Joe Perry met when
they were kids, both in bands, merged
their musical forces, and young Steven
changed his name to Steven Tyler. In the
early 1970s, Aerosmith
set up their equipment in front of the
student union at Boston University, a
few stops on the Green Line trolley from
the apartment they shared at 1325 Commonwealth
Avenue. A few hundred yards down Comm
Ave., Aerosmith played
and rehearsed, gained fans and fiscal
support in Kenmore Square near Fenway
Park. Buy

Opening for bands like Mott the Hoople
and The Kinks, Aerosmith’s
first album was recorded in two weeks,
and they’ve been dominating the
biggest arenas in the world since the
mid-70s.
Aerosmith hits like,
“Dream On,” “Walk This
Way,” “Sweet Emotion,”
“Dude Looks Like A Lady,”
“Pink,” “Cryin,”
“Crazy,” “Livin’
on the Edge,” and “Jaded,”
ensure that Aerosmith
music will be blaring out of jacked-up
speakers for a very long time to come.
Aerosmith cemented Boston’s
place as a venerated music town, set a
standard for rock ‘n’ roll
and answered the question: can American
boys rock like their British counterparts?,
with a resounding “Yeah. Just check
out Aerosmith.”
